TIPS FOR RUNNING OUTSIDE

By: Michael Brennan, Team Villa Coach

Now that the warm weather is here to stay (fingers crossed!), here are some tips on pounding the pavement safely and effectively:

  • Cars - make sure you look all ways at intersections; give motorists room to react & move
  • Irregular sidewalks/roads - watch out for potholes, cracks or lifted pavement as you go along - don’t assume the pavement is smooth
  • Getting lost - know your route in advance (write it down or tell someone where you are going and the estimated time of arrival)
  • Running in the dark – if you choose to run at night, wear reflective gear and bright colors. But remember, we’re hard to see even if in reflective gear sometimes.
  • Hecklers – ignore them, don’t waste your energy
  • ‘Bonking’ – when your body stalls mid-run (also known as hitting a wall), make sure you have money for food/water and transportation. And always remember to carry your ID.
  • MP3 or iPod – great for entertainment, but drown out the sounds around you -- don’t use one or use it in very public places
  • Security – stick to well-lit paths and always be aware of surroundings, landmarks, and other runners you could call out to in an emergency
  • Carry a Fox whistle – they are very light, shrill, won’t rattle
